A self-styled maverick of major ambition and until now

A self-styled maverick of major ambition and, until now, minor films, director P.T. Anderson has achieved a bombastic breakthrough with There Will Be Blood dvd. A haunting enigma that refuses to conform to any recognizable pattern, period or otherwise. I suppose you could see it as a descendent of Citizen Kane. But such comparisons arent really fair to either film. Anachronistic and phantasmagoric, Americas early race for oil is brought into personal terms that resonate with the withering decay of greed. Another phenomenal performance from Daniel Day-Lewis, who balances his characters purpose as symbol and depth as an individual. Andersons period piece evokes memories of East of Eden with its family conflicts, Elmer Gantry in its evangelical moments, and Days of Heaven in its epic visuals. Daniel Day-Lewis performance is the best of 2007, a towering portrayal of searing hatred.
